When to Install Interior Doors During Construction or Renovation

When building or renovating a home, interior doors often seem like one of the final decisions.

Choose the style, measure the openings and install the doors once most of the construction is finished.

For conventional doors, that approach can sometimes work.

For custom, flush, pocket, pivot or floor-to-ceiling doors, however, waiting until the end of the project can significantly limit your options.

Some door systems need to be selected before walls are finished. Others depend on the final flooring height. Concealed frames may need to be incorporated directly into the wall construction.

This creates an important distinction:

Choosing the doors and installing the doors are not necessarily supposed to happen at the same stage of construction.

Understanding that difference can prevent expensive modifications later.

When Should You Choose Your Interior Doors?

Ideally, the main interior door systems should be selected during the architectural or early construction phase.

This doesn’t necessarily mean choosing every finish and handle immediately.

The flooring may not need to be physically installed when the door is ordered, but its final elevation should already be established.

What About Different Flooring Between Rooms?

Another detail appears when two rooms use different floor materials.

A hallway might use wood while a bathroom uses tile.

The finished elevations may not automatically be identical.

The transition often occurs directly beneath or around the door opening.

That means the location and height of each finished surface can affect how the completed doorway looks.

Flush Interior Doors Need Earlier Planning

Flush interior doors create a particularly clean relationship between the door and wall.

Instead of emphasizing the opening with conventional trim, the frame can integrate much more discreetly into the surrounding surface.

Preliminary dimensions can be established from architectural plans.

But custom manufacturing should ultimately rely on dimensions appropriate to the actual project conditions and the requirements of the selected system.

  • finished floor elevation
  • ceiling height
  • frame dimensions
  • adjacent wall dimensions

Existing homes require particular attention.

Walls may not be perfectly straight or square, and actual dimensions can differ from original construction plans.

Don’t Order Custom Doors from Rough Measurements Alone

There is an important difference between a rough opening and the final dimensions required to manufacture a door system.

The rough opening is part of the construction.

The finished door system has its own tolerances and requirements.

With custom interior doors, those requirements may vary according to the frame and opening mechanism.

The contractor and door supplier should therefore coordinate dimensions rather than assuming that the nominal size of the opening is sufficient for manufacturing.

When Should the Door Finish Be Selected?

The Best Construction Sequence Depends on the Door System

There is no single installation sequence that applies to every interior door.

A conventional prehung door, concealed-frame flush door, pocket door and oversized pivot system each have different requirements.

The important principle is therefore not:

“Install all interior doors at this particular stage.”

It is:

“Select the door systems early enough that the construction can be prepared correctly for them.”

The actual panels may arrive much later.

The architectural decisions cannot always wait.

A Simple Planning Timeline

For a custom residential project, the process might look approximately like this:

Architectural planning: determine door locations, approximate dimensions and opening systems.

Before wall construction: identify pocket doors, concealed frames, oversized openings and other systems affecting framing.

Before final measurements: establish finished flooring and wall conditions.

Before manufacturing: verify dimensions, handing, hardware, frame configuration and finishes.

During finishing: coordinate wall treatments, flooring, baseboards and other surrounding materials.

Final installation: install and adjust the panels and hardware according to the requirements of the selected system.

The exact sequence will vary by project, but this approach prevents the door decisions from being left until everything around them is already complete.

The Most Expensive Time to Change a Door Is Often at the End

A homeowner may discover a beautiful flush or floor-to-ceiling door late in the renovation and assume that it can simply replace the conventional door originally planned.

Sometimes it can.

Sometimes achieving the desired result requires reopening walls, modifying framing or changing finished surfaces.

That does not mean custom doors are inherently complicated.

It means certain architectural decisions are much easier and less disruptive when they are made at the appropriate stage.

Plan the Doors Before You Need the Doors

Interior doors may be installed relatively late in construction, but they should often be designed much earlier.
